Itinerary

Duration

Medio dia

Altitude

3800 m.s.n.m

Type of trip

CUSCO - PISKAKUCHO/WAYLLABAMBA

Departure to Piskakucho by bus, where we meet our porters and begin the trek. Two hours later we will arrive to Llaqtapata the first remains in a beautiful natural setting. Two hours later we arrive to our campsite near to Wayllabamba village.

WAYLLABAMBA - PAKAYMAYU

Wake up early because our second day is hard and tedious. Today a steep ascent takes us through an area of tropical cloud forest and up to the Llulluchapamapa Valley. The views are spectacular as we climb up to the Warmihuañusca Pass, 4,200 meters (13,700 ft) above sea level and then drop steeply down again into the Pakaymayu valley and to our campsite

PAKAYMAYU - PHUYUPATAMARKA

An easier climb takes us past the remains of Runkuracay look-out, from here we can look across to the snow-capped peaks of the Cordillera Vilcabamba. Traversing the Runkuracay Pass. The Inka Trail now becomes more apparent, descending past Yanacocha (The Black Lagoon), a dry lake; we reach the ancient complex of Sayacmarka. Then suddenly we enter the rain-forest, at the route's highest Inca construction at Phuyupatamarka another important construction in the Inca trail. And our last campsite in the Inka trail.

PHUYUPATAMARKA - MACHUPICCHU

Now we are in open country again. Far away we get glimpses of Mounts Pumásillo and Salkantay, and thousands of feet below, we see once again the Urubamba River. Then the long descent down the amazing, never ending Inka steps begins.

Stopping off at the well-preserved remains of Wiñay wayna. At Intipunku, the Sun Gate, we get our first view of Machu Picchu. We finally cross the ridge that leads to our destination, and the full grandeur of the greatest archaeological discovery of modern times is revealed. We drive by bus downhill and spend the night at the hotel in Aguas Calientes town.

MACHUPICCHU – CUSCO

We return to the citadel early in the morning by bus, for an exciting guided tour. In the afternoon, we back to Aguas Calientes town where we take the train. Back to Cusco and transfer to the hotel.
